How to Manage Workplace Stress

This week is stress awareness week and today is stress awareness day, so we would like to take this opportunity to highlight the importance of workplace related stress and the steps employers and HR managers can take to minimize this.

A study conducted in July 2021, stated that nearly a quarter (23%) of UK adults say the work in general causes them stress and 18% wrote that their workloads made them feel stressed. Work related stress can show in many ways, whether that’s physical, psychological, or behavioural, symptoms can include headaches, heart palpitations, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and mood swings. All of these can increase sick days, absences and can cause a drop in work performance.

Causes and Solutions

General Work-Related Stress

With 23% of UK adults stating they have stress due to work. Employers or HR managers should take some steps that can improve the atmosphere at work for example, promoting healthy eating and exercise to decrease stress. Or encouraging employees to communicate any issues or improvements within the workplace.

Workload and Hours

18% of UK adults indicated that workload made them stress and 14% wrote work hours, it is suggested that allowing flexible working hours or the option to work from home can reduce this stress. In addition to highlighting the importance of a healthy work/life balance, management need to ensure that employees are using out of office hours to switch off from work and destress.

Colleagues and Management

21% of UK adults reported that their workplace stress had been caused by their boss or colleagues, hostility within the workplace can lead to increased absences or cause employees to leave the company. Therefore, it is important to encourage open and honest conversation between employees and management, so staff are comfortable raising any issues. Offering team building exercises will also reduce tension within the workplace and promote unity throughout the team.

Dispirited employees, decreased determination, higher rates of absences and staff turnover are all causes of concern for management and can be seen as a result of workplace stress.
